Lawrence Carroll

Lawrence Carroll was born in Melbourne in 1954, he lived and worked in Italy and in the United States, died in 2019. He studied in Los Angeles before settling in New York, a city in which he made his debut as a visual artist in the mid-1980s. He came into contact with artists such as Jasper Johns, Marc Rothko, Donald Judd, Sean Scully, who were influential for his post-minimal artistic maturation. Carroll almost immediately begins to experiment with the different possibilities of placing himself in the space of the painted canvas, creating a series of small “pictorial boxes” that associate the three-dimensionality of the object to the two-dimensionality of painting. From this moment Carroll’s art becomes a research on the relationship between painting and sculpture: in the absence of figurative images and representative signs, he uses frames and canvases not as a supports on which to spread the color, but as bodies designed in their entirety. The canvas is never complete, but is the result of stitching and joining fragments and layers that are different, thus revealing a plot with a previous story, in which the apparent monochrome and sutures evoke emotions and dilated temporality.

His first personal exhibition was held at Stux Gallery in New York in 1988. Among the most important personal in institutions around the world: Kunstmuseum Kloster, Magdeburg and Vincenzo Vela Museum, Ligornetto (2017), MAMBO, Bologna (2014), Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Dublin (2012), Museo Correr, Venice (2008), Hôtel des Arts, Toulon (2007), Städtische Ausstellungshalle, Münster (1997), Centre d’Art Contemporain, Bignan (1994).
