LAWRENCE CARROLL

Biography

Born in Melbourne in 1954, Lawrence Carroll lived and worked in Italy and in the United States, and passed away in May 2019. He studied in Los Angeles before settling in New York, where he made his debut as a visual artist in the mid-1980s. He began to experiment with the space of painted canvas creating a series of small “pictorial boxes” bringing together the three-dimensionality of the object with the two-dimensionality of painting. From this moment Carroll’s research was devoted to the relationship between sculpture and painting: in the absence of figurative images and representative signs, he used frames and canvases not as backgrounds for color, but as real bodies. The canvas is never complete, but the result of the stitching and joining of different fragments and layers.

His first personal exhibition was held at Stux Gallery in New York in 1988, followed by important solo shows in institutions around the world: Fondazione Rolla, Bruzella (2019), Kunstmuseum Kloster, Magdeburg and Vincenzo Vela Museum, Ligornetto (2017), MAMBO, Bologna (2014), Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Dublin (2012), Museo Correr, Venice (2008), Hôtel des Arts, Toulon (2007), Städtische Ausstellungshalle, Münster (1997), Centre d’Art Contemporain, Bignan (1994). Among the group exhibitions in institutions: Kunsthalle Krems, Krems an der Donau (2018), Kunsthalle Mannheim (2013), Lugano Museum of Art (2012), MUDAM, Luxembourg (2010), Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (2008), MART, Rovereto (2002), Palazzo Ducale, Sassuolo (2001), Museum Folkwang, Essen (1996), Guggenheim Museum SoHo, New York (1995), Kölnischer Kunstverein, Köln (1994), Bronx Museum, New York (1987).

Lawrence Carroll also took part in international exhibitions: Venice Biennale (2013,2009) and Documenta, Kassel (2005, 1992). His collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 2005 with the setting up of a personal exhibition in the gallery spaces. Also in 2005 he exhibited in the group show “VISIONI, 20 artists in Sant’Agostino”.
