On 12 December, Museo San Fedele, Milano hosts the opening of an important focus of the exhibition KOUNELLIS | WARHOL. Staging the human tragedy: the Classicism of Jannis Kounellis and the Pop of Andy Warhol
In the crypt of Museo San Fedele, Milano, it’s possible to view the installation Senza titolo, Svelamento, realized by Jannis Kounellis in 2012, which meditates on the theme of the Apocalypse. The latter refers to a revelation, an unveiling, which arises from a laceration, a necessary rupture so that the object hidden from our gaze can manifest itself in its truth. The Apocalypse – as Kounellis stated – is an event of “liberation”.
Until 29 May, there will be an unprecedented dialogue between the permanent work by Jannis Kounellis and the artwork Eggs (1984) by Andy Warhol, on loan for the occasion. The egg is the primordial symbol of birth, transformation, and cyclical renewal.
For the Ruthenian culture, the community to which Andy Warhol belonged, the egg represents life and rebirth, the Resurrection of Christ, the continuity of community and family, and protection from evil. In Ruthenian tradition, the exchange of eggs is a symbol of good luck.
Both artworks evoke the theme of resurrection, suggesting a secular liturgy in which the two artists engage in dialogue.
