LETIZIA CARIELLO
LETIZIA CARIELLO
Biography
Born in Copparo (province of Ferrara), Letizia Cariello lives and works in Milan, where she currently teaches Anatomical Drawing at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. Raised in a family from Naples devoted to sculpture from more than two hundred years, Letizia Cariello graduated in History of Art at the University of Milan with Pierluigi De Vecchi. After working for filmsetting in Italy and in the United States, she graduated in Painting at the Brera Academy under the supervision of Pietro Plescan. Letizia Cariello’s research explores through different practices and media (drawing, installation, photography, sculpture, video…), the relationship between inner and outer space. Her attempt to capture the consistency of time focuses on the chase of the traces left by its flow by writing them (the calendars) on objects and matters.
Aim of this process is a continuous performance to re-construct connections, relations and bonds (the red thread) through the identification and the real seam of objects and spaces, both in macro and micro dimensions: from trees to teapots, from small cups to embroidered photographs. Letizia Cariello’s works are part of public and private collections in Italy and abroad. During the Barroso Presidence, she was selected to take part together with other fourteen European artists, thinkers and scientists in the project “A New Narrative for Europe”. She has been showing her work in institutions such as: Cascina Maria, Agrate Conturbia (2019, 2018), Palazzo Borromeo, Milan (2018, 2016), LAC, Lugano (2016), Centro Luigi Pecci, Prato (2003), Palazzo delle Papesse, Centro Arte Contemporanea, Siena (2001).
Over the years she took part in numerous group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including: La Triennale, Milan (2018), University of Graz (2017), Poldi Pezzoli Museum, Milan (2014), Embassy of Italy, Berlin (2013), MAGA Museum Of Contemporary Art, Gallarate (2012, 2010), Fondazione Pomodoro, Milan (2010), National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. (2007), Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Virginia Beach (2006), MART, Rovereto (2003), Kunstverein Ludvigsburg (2002). Her collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 2018, followed in September 2019 by her first solo show at the gallery “Seven Gates” curated by Giorgio Verzotti.
