Biography

Born in Bagnatica in 1930, Paolo Ghilardi passed away in Bergamo in 2014. He attended the Industrial Technical Institute in Bergamo and the evening lessons held by Achille Funi, director of the Carrara Academy. His first solo show in Milano dates 1967 and since the mid-70s he took part in the meetings promoted by the International Center for Constructivist Art Studies of Antwerp-Bonn developing an increasing interest in abstractionism. He realized a series of monochrome or polychrome squares, with multiple or rotating planes, recovering and refining the European geometric tradition. During the ’80s and the ‘90s, Bergamo municipality asked him to curate the urban decoration of the historic center, under the role of consoler for the “piano colore” (color plan).

Among his personal exhibitions in institutions: ex Chiesa della Maddalena, Bergamo (2016), GAMeC, Bergamo (2007), Palazzo Municipale, Seriate (2006), Liceo Artistico Statale, Bergamo (2002). He also participates in numerous group exhibitions, including: Palazzo della Ragione, Bergamo (2003, 2002), Musée d’Art Moderne, Strasbourg (2000), Palazzo della Permanente, Milan (1994), Museu de Arte Brasileira, San Paolo (1986), Palazzo dei Diamanti, Ferrara (1984), Palazzo Reale, Genoa (1980), Museo de Arte Contemporàneo, Caracas and Centro Arte, Valencia (1976), International Center for Construction Art, Düsseldorf (1974).

His collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 1996 with his participation in the group exhibition “Uscita di sicurezza” and continued in 1998 with another collective show “Insieme oltre una linea d’ombra”, a charity exhibition organized by Galleria Fumagalli. His personal exhibition at the gallery dates 1999, and was accompanied by a catalog with texts by Claudio Cerritelli and Annamaria Maggi.
