Biography
Claudio Verna was born in Guardiagrele (Chieti) in 1937. From 1942 to 1956 he studied in Umbria, then at the University of Florence, where he graduated with a thesis on Figurative Arts in industrial civilization and he held his first exhibitions. In 1961 he moved to Rome. After having experimented with Informal art in the 50s, for some years he stopped exhibiting his works to define an independent thought and the tools of his research. In 1967 he went back to exhibit, definitively convinced of the fundamental reasons of Painting. This is the period of the so-called “Analytical painting”, a sort of reaction to American Minimalism. In 2008 he was named National Academic of the Accademia di San Luca.
After the debut at Galleria Numero di Florence in 1960, Claudio Verna has been taking part in numerous personal exhibitions held in institutions such as: Museo Alto Garda, Riva del Garda (2018), Convento del Carmine, Marsala (2013), Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo, L’Aquila (2007), Palazzo Mormino, Donnalucata (2001), Casa dei Carraresi, Treviso (2000), “La Sapienza” University, Rome (1999), Palazzo Sarcinelli, Conegliano and Accademia dei Concordi, Rovigo (1998), PAC, Ferrara (1997), Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna, Spoleto (1994), Loggetta Lombardesca, Ravenna (1990), Museo Civico, Gibellina (1988), Palazzo dei Leoni, Messina (1986). Claudio Verna has been taking part in the Venice Biennale in 1980 and 1970 and in the Rome Quadriennale in 1973.
Among the most important group exhibitions in institutions: Museo Gagliardi, Noto (2018), Galleria Civica, Modena (2015), MART, Rovereto (2012), GAMeC, Bergamo (2010), Neue Galerie, Graz (2008), Museo della Permanente, Milan (2007), Italian Institute of Culture, London (2006), Palazzo Strozzi, Florence (2002), GAM, Bologna (1998), Musée Chateau d’Annecy, Grenoble (1992), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm (1991), PAC, Milan (1989), Kunstverein, Frankfurt (1987), Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (1977), Castelvecchio Museum, Verona (1975), Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf (1973). The collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 1993 with his first solo show accompanied by the catalog curated by Giovanni Maria Accame. It continued in 1998 with the second solo exhibition “Piccolo Formato. Works 1959-1997” followed by the publication of a catalog with a text by Mauro Panzera.
