Giuseppe Maraniello was born in Naples in 1945, after studying art he moved to Milan where he currently lives and works. Initially interested in photography, since the mid-70s he focused on painting and sculpture, both languages that the artist has been using dialectically seeking for a formal synthesis. In 1980 the exhibition “Dieci anni dopo: i nuovi nuovi” curated by Renato Barilli established the birth of the group of the “nuovi nuovi” and Giuseppe Maraniello constantly took part in their collective exhibitions. His works are the result of a hybridization process between pictorial sign and sculptural form, an intervention in which the artist gives wide freedom to his imagination creating a fantastic universe of archaic and mythical presences such as archers, little devils and acrobats.

Besides numerous monumental sculptures permanently installed in Italian and international public spaces, Giuseppe Maraniello has been exhibiting in personal exhibitions in institutions such as: Giardino di Boboli, Florence (2009), Torre Guevara, Ischia (2004), Rocca Sforzesca, Imola (2002), Fortezza Firmafede, Sarzana (2001), Galleria Civica, Trento and Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna (1993). Among the collectives shows: Gardens of the Reggia di Venaria Reale (2016-2017), Musée D’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Saint-Ètienne and Museum MADRE, Naples (2015), Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, Milan (2005), MART, Rovereto (2004), Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna (1997, 1980), Museum of Modern Art, Bogotà (1992), Palazzo di Cristallo, Madrid (1990), Loggetta Lombardesca, Ravenna (1980), Galleria Civica dʼArte Moderna, Modena (1979).

In 1989 he was head of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, in Lecce and in Bologna, and from 1991 to 2003 in Milano at Brera Academy. In 1990 Giuseppe Maraniello took part with a personal room in the XLIV Biennale of Art in Venice. His collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 2000 with his first personal exhibition at the gallery, where he exhibited sculptures and wall works. On this occasion the gallery published the catalogue “Maraniello. Opere 1978/2000”, curated by Marco Meneguzzo with texts by Pier Giovanni Castagnoli, Antonio d’Avossa, Gillo Dorfles, Danilo Eccher, Aurora Garcia, Giancarlo Politi, Lea Vergine.
