KENNETH NOLAND
KENNETH NOLAND
Biography
Kenneth Noland was born in 1924 in Asheville, North Carolina, and passed away in 2010 in Port Clyde, Maine. He studied at Black Mountain College, near Asheville, and in 1948 left for Paris to study Painting and Sculpture with Ossip Zadkine. His early works were influenced by Paul Klee, but he soon moved away from abstract expressionism: in 1958 he began to paint concentric rings of color, focusing on the interaction between the different backgrounds that unleash a sort of energy expanding the work beyond the limits of the canvas. In 1963 he replaced the rings with a zig-zag pattern, and at the end of the 60s approached a new style characterized by horizontal Stripes proposing a radical painting prone to Minimalism. In the following decade he produced the Shaped Canvases, works that emphasize the abstraction through the asymmetry of the canvas and refusing the idea of paining as a “window on the world”.
His important solo exhibitions were held in institutions all over the world: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010), The Butler Institute of American Art, Warren OH (2007, 1986), Tate, Liverpool (2006), Museum of Fine Art, Houston (2004, 1994), Naples Museum of Art, Florida (2002), Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester VT (2001), Colosseo Metro Station, Rome (1996), Museo de Bella Artes, Bilbao (1985), University Art Museum, University of California, Berkeley (1984), Duke University Museum of Art, Durham NC and Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City (1983), Museum of Art, Toledo OH (1978), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum , New York (1977). In 1964 he took part in the 32nd Venice Biennale. Among the group shows in the most important institutions: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and Centre Pompidou, Metz (2019), National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2018),
Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires (2015), National Gallery of Art, Washington (2009), MET, New York (2007), Museion, Bolzano (2005), Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlino (2003), Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, Madrid (2002), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2000), Orlando Museo of Art (1990), MoMA, New York (1985), Institute of Fine Arts, Mexico City (1980), Tate Gallery, London (1974). In 2005 Galleria Fumagalli dedicated to Kenneth Noland a solo exhibition “Kenneth Noland – 12 works”, accompanied by an extensive monograph published by Silvana Editoriale with a text by Franco Fanelli. In 2008 a second solo show was set up in Bergamo, while in 2015 the gallery curated the exhibition “Kenneth Noland. Works 1958-1980” at Galleria Cardi Milano, accompanied by the republished text by Franco Fanelli.
