Maurizio Mochetti was born in 1940 in Rome, where he lives and works. He studied at the Artistic High School and at the Academy of Fines Arts in Rome. In the late ’60s, he was among the first in Italy to relate works and space in a vivid and symbiotic manner, “drawing” in space with light. His research focuses precisely on the physical nature of light, free from any symbolic or mystical meaning, working first on photons to model light radiations and at a later time directly with the laser. This technological medium reveals further potential of expression of the invisible space, beyond what normal light can express: it allows to create works that have no dimension, almost imaginary. Over the years Mocchetti’s work has been evolving according to new technologies, used as tools to combine mathematical and physical harmony in a conceptual dimension.

The collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 2011 with the artist’s participation in a group exhibition together with Giovanni Anselmo, Enrico Castellani and Maurizio Nannucci, followed by the publication of a book in 2018. The project was born from the idea of showing how, from ‘60s to today, the theoretical and practical conscience that invested painting and sculpture has evolved from a concept of still closed space – albeit already three-dimensional with Lucio Fontana, which identifies subsequent developments – to a concept of occupation of the space.
