MAURIZIO MOCHETTI
MAURIZIO MOCHETTI
Biography
Maurizio Mochetti was born in 1940 in Rome, where he lives and works. He studied at the Artistic High School and at the Academy of Fines Arts in Rome. In the late ’60s, he was among the first in Italy to relate works and space in a vivid and symbiotic manner, “drawing” in space with light. His research focuses precisely on the physical nature of light, free from any symbolic or mystical meaning, working first on photons to model light radiations and at a later time directly with the laser. This technological medium reveals further potential of expression of the invisible space, beyond what normal light can express: it allows to create works that have no dimension, almost imaginary. Over the years Mocchetti’s work has been evolving according to new technologies, used as tools to combine mathematical and physical harmony in a conceptual dimension.
He has been showing in personal exhibitions in institutions: Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna, Spoleto (2009), MAXXI, Rome (2007), Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Fiumicino (2004), Palazzo Ducale, Sassuolo (2003), Centro Cultural del Conde Duque, Madrid (2000), Laboratory Museum of Contemporary Art, “La Sapienza” University, Rome (1995), Fortezza da Basso, Florence (1992), Städtische Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf (1978), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (1975). Among the numerous group exhibitions: Palazzo Bracci-Pagani, Fano (2018), National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome (2017), Prada Foundation, Milan (2016), MAXXI, Rome (2012, 2010), Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2008), Museum of Permanent, Milan (2005), La Triennale, Milan (2004), Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena (2002), Kunstforum in der GrundkreditBank, Berlin (2000), MoMA PS1, New York (1999), Centro Luigi Pecci, Prato (1998), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1994), Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1993), Museum of Modern Art, Bolzano (1991, 1990), Exhibit Pavillon, Leningrad (1989), National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (1988), Alvar Aalto-museum, Jyvaskyla (1986), Italian Cultural Institute, Tokyo (1978), Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (1977), Museum of the Philadelphia Civil Center, Philadelphia (1973), National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome (1968).
Among the international shows: Rome Quadriennale (2005, 1999, 1986, 1973), Venice Biennale (1997, 1988, 1986, 1982, 1978, 1970), Sao Paulo Biennial (1998), Nagoya International Biennial (1991) , Sidney Biennial (1976). The collaboration with Galleria Fumagalli began in 2011 with the artist’s participation in a group exhibition together with Giovanni Anselmo, Enrico Castellani and Maurizio Nannucci, followed by the publication of a book in 2018. The project was born from the idea of showing how, from ‘60s to today, the theoretical and practical conscience that invested painting and sculpture has evolved from a concept of still closed space – albeit already three-dimensional with Lucio Fontana, which identifies subsequent developments – to a concept of occupation of the space.
