KEISUKE TAKAHASHI & MIKUNI YANAIHARA
OFF-NIBROLL
29 November 2011 to 4 February 2012
Text
With regard to the March 11, 2011 disaster where thousands of lives were lost, together with houses, buildings and whole areas in Japan which are no longer habitable and will not be for many years, the artistic duo Off-Nibroll dedicate their solo exhibition to a consideration arising from this tragic event. Keisuke Takahashi and Mikuni Yanaihara cannot think of their art without considering the dramatic situation their country is still facing and without considering the discussions and changes that this event brought.
The debate on nuclear energy use, the altering balance of power within Japanese society, the disruption of daily habits and the memory of the past are at the core of this story told through a series of videos, where pain is not overwhelming but used as a full stop from which to start. Keisuke, visual director, and Mikuni, choreographer and modern dancer, formed the Off-Nibroll duo in 2005; their work mainly deals with the relationship between body and image.
Their purpose is to go beyond the barriers of theatre and make dance to interact with the audience. For this reason, Keisuke’s videos are created using digital re-workings of videos of Mikuni’s choreographies which are adapted to narrate themes such as nature, progress, and the evolution of the society, while Mikuni’s performances are integrated with the projected videos, dialoguing with the surrounded places.
