DENNIS OPPENHEIM
SCULPTURE MILWAUKEE
Dennis Oppenheim’s Safety Cones are giant light cones (reminiscent of the shape of donkey hats) designed for urban spaces. At night, their ghostly blue lights draw visitors to the orange pyramids like fire with moths. This work refers to the precedents by the artist, made during his first stay in New York in 1966. The Safety Cones recall how human beings constantly change or influence the environment around them, often losing the conception of what is poetic and historical in relation to our place in the earth.
