Recently closed the great retrospective at the Institut Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, Agostino Bonalumi presents a large work created for that occasion together with an environmental work that highlights the thought through which his artistic experience has developed. The exhibition presents the large-dimension extroflexed canvas Bianco e Grigio (2003), in which the artist matches two different moments of his research. Resuming the experiences of the 70s and 80s, when formal solutions found their fulfillment from a constructivist approach, but where, however, the rational element was accompanied by a careful attention to “appearance” issues, the artist turns the formal design of the work into its current research.

«If the sign was arranged according parallels and symmetries that were contradicted by regulated transcendence, now – Bonalumi explains – it is a loose, liberated sign, which alludes to the gesture and still to a goal of construction. The monochrome stimulates the perception to notice the ephemeral tonal variations, the announcement of disturbed geometries, the running of the reinforcing bar, which restrains towards an intuitive inner side of the work or repels the surface». The other exhibited work is Opera Ambiente Giallo-Bianco specially designed and created for this show. This is a new evidence of Bonalumi’s interest in the work as a fact and appearance, rationality and expression.

«The geometry of the space-environment and the abstract construction of the same space – the artist underlines – are superimposed with a gap of coincidence, with the intrusion of geometrically precarious elements». The exhibition is accompanied by a monograph curated by Klaus Wolbert with texts by Klaus Wolbert, Gillo Dorfles and Marco Meneguzzo, in co-edition Galleria Fumagalli and Galleria Niccoli.
