Text

Young artist Maria Elisabetta Novello found in the material component that is at the base of her works, the ash, the way to conceive her artistic poetic. She works with precarious and minimal signs of anthropologic memory. She collects her material (like in her work Paesaggi, that is featured in the exhibition) in different ways and gives it back, in silent, giving a new identity, a new image, highly meditative. With the ash she creates intricate embroideries that disappear in her performances, lines, horizons, accumulations, sedimentations and micro-formations. Her ash is constantly moving and transforming, crossing the memory, but adapting itself to a new “physicality”. The ash is also color, but there are variations of hue, from the black of the smut to the clearest gray of the dust of ash, that is a mono color, a monochromatic, a physical and ideal resetting, such as in the works Campionature. She proceeds through minimal variations, working on the absence, there is not an object, but a subject, the ash which cancels the rigidity of the work and sometimes denies its existence. The ash is each time reworked and adapted to new experiences in a regular flow of thoughts. The form is present, but it’s free from constrictions, a concept, a thought, a suspension. The thoughts flow to the unattainable and elusive, to the desire and the attempt of reaching knowledge.

The works Orizzonti are immaterial environments, surfaces on which the end cannot be grabbed, everything is unattainable and elusive, everything is the analysis of the reality made of corps and invisible corpuscles. The work contains a sense of temporal uncertainty, an itinerary, a passage from a condition to another or from a place to another, a crossing. The material and the immaterial, the past and the present, the doubt, the individual and the universe, the imponderable and the intangible. In the exhibition the installation Causa effetto is sited in a dark room. Through the sound of a registered breath, the finest dust of ash is slightly moved and lifted up. Increasing its physicality, the dust creates a microcosm made of fine dust, seen in the air with a dedicated light. A closed-circuit videocamera films the enlarged image and projects it. At the end of the process, part of the dust falls, while part of it is freed in the air. In the moment of activity the ash takes shape demonstrating always its intangible essence and its immaterial and day-fly existence. In the exhibition there is also the work Pale: the artist reused ancient frames devoted to paintings of altarpieces.

On these frames made of wood, covered with plexiglas, which gives the possibility to see the frame transparently, she creates chromatic drafts like they were skies full of ash. In this work she adds the concept of the rescue of a used and ancient material, which has the memory of past and the idea of inviolable. The exhibition title, Liridi, is mysterious and subtle such as the physical and mental declinations of the language. The Liridi are swarm of meteorites that occurs every year from April 15 to April 28. The radiant is localized in the Lira constellation. Every year the Earth crosses this cloud of sandy rubbles and a part of it hits our atmosphere “turning it on” and becoming a meteorite. After the bang with our atmosphere at 29,8 Kilometers per second of speed, these small residuals disintegrate. Usually 15-20 meteorites are visible in every hour during the top of the activity, but in the past the Liridi showed a period of intensive activity generating a rain with more than 100 meteorites visible in only one hour. «Also if day by day my work improves in some elements, I notice that my itinerary always brings me to reflect about inexplicable things».
