MARIA ELISABETTA NOVELLO

Biography

Born in Vicenza (IT) in 1974 Maria Elisabetta Novello is based in Udine and obtained a diploma in painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. Her artistic research is developed through the use of unusual materials such as ash and dust which reveal the passing of time and the forming of the past, turning the “old” into something new. From the outset she has experimented with practices of sculpture, installation, and performance art, also referring to more traditional genres within the history of art such as the landscape. She acts on signs of both private and public, social and relational, anthropological memory, to grasp the precariousness of existence and history, and to preserve defined times and spaces. Her gesture embraces an ephemeral and fleeting element that carries the fragility of the contemporary as well as the beauty and instability of existence itself.
Maria Elisabetta Novello’s research on transformation develops through a series of works and matters: with ash she creates, for example, “landscapes” and “horizons” under glass cases or large floor installations (writings or figures);

through the archives of dust, collected together with other urban materials, she creates a metaphorical image of spaces; with Sursum Corda, among her latest projects, she records those fundamental actions that articulates the rhythm of life (breath, heartbeat, emotions) and opens her inner world from the awareness of the human being and its fundamental actions. She has been exhibiting in solo exhibitions in institutions such as: Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Roma (2020), Castello, San Vito al Tagliamento (2018) and Casa Cavazzini Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Udine (2015), and in numerous group projects in: Biennale di Disegno – Palazzo Gambalunga, Rimini (2018), Collateral Event of the 57th Venice Biennale – Palazzo Ca’ Faccanon & Torre Pallavicina, Bergamo (2017), Rome Quadriennale (2016), CAMUSAC Museum, Cassino (2016), Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea, Monfalcone (2015, 2009), Italian Embassy, Brussels (2013), Museo Civico G. Fattori, Livorno (2012), Fabbrica del vapore, Milan (2010), Villa Manin, Udine (2007), Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza (2004).

Her work is part of public and private collections such as: VAF Stiftung Collection, MART, Rovereto, Collezione d’Arte Contemporanea San Vito al Tagliamento. She was winner of prices: “Premio Amarene Fabbri” (2015), “Premio acquisto per la nuova collezione d’arte contemporanea del Credito Cooperativo di Udine”, “Premio Fondazione VAF” (2014), “Blumm Prize” (2013), “Premio Combat” (2012), “Premio Arti Visive San Fedele” (2010), “Premio Borsista 83°ma Bevilacqua La Masa” (1999). Maria Elisabetta Novello has been collaborating with Galleria Fumagalli since 2012, the year of her first solo show “Liridi”. In 2017 a second solo, “Sursum Corda”, was presented in the new gallery spaces in Milan.
